About

I wrote this song many years ago as a tribute in thanks to all the wonderful folks I met on iCompositions. I put it out as a collaboration and Garni, Dylan, Billy A and the inestimable Trilobite2 joined in and brought it to life.

So raise a glass with me, if you will, if you had the pleasure to sail aboard the Good Ship iComp ... Bless her, and Cheers!

Welcome aboard the Good Ship iComper

The gangplank is that way and the bar never closes

She’s seaworthy, trust me, grab a free life-preserver

When the booze is aboard we’ll be a’weighing the anchor.

Our mission, like our crew, could not be any simpler

With Captain PM at the helm we will wander

The seas and the oceans a’searching for plunder

There’s no song too poxy that someone won’t cover.

Bless the Good Ship iComp, Lord, and all who sail with her

For we know not what we do but we’re we’re doing it together

And we’re likely to sink in the fairest of weathers

For we don’t know our port from our starboard or rudder

You’re welcome to board whether seadog or lubber

(Though there’s a hearty Yo Ho if you’re a good female singer)

But there’s no time for scurvy here or seasickness either

On the Good Ship iComp you’re either drunk or hungover

The crew, Lord, is motley we come from all corners

Alaska, Peru, Singapore, and Down Under.

There’s Brits, Cowboys, Indians (those Euro’s are bonkers)

And there’s ghosts that rise up known as Davy Jones’ lurkers

Bless the Good Ship iComp, Lord, and all who sail with her

For we know not what we do but we’re we’re doing it together

And we’re likely to wreck in the calmest of harbours

For we can’t tell our poopdeck from our … sea monsters

Leave a bad comment and we’ll shiver your timbers

No quarter is given to unsolicited pluggers

The CO is a map to lost buried old treasures

And the Chart it’s the Head, there you’ll find the old buggers.

So come all ye faithful old fiddlers and ravers

There’s a home for you here right by the old rockers

So what did we do with the last drunken sailor?

We promoted him, Sir, made him Chief Moderator!

Bless the Good Ship iComp, Lord, and all who sail with her

For we know not what we do but we’re we’re doing it together

And there’s no chance in Hell we will make decent sailors

So let’s stick to what all do best: annoying the neighbours …

Bless the Good Ship iComp, Lord, and all who sail(ed) with her …

  1. Hearing a sea shanty like this makes me want to go out and haul on the bowline : )

This is simply brilliant on many levels. It is at once a parody of sailing songs and yet a heartfelt testimony to something special that sprung up in a unique time and place – the heady heyday of online music sharing. The fact that it evolved as a collaboration underscores that emotion. Its energy and enthusiasm for what was happening is palpable. I like how it is a celebration of the moment (not a nostalgic looking back at what once was and now is gone). It is conglomeration of sly humor and great lyrics and bad puns. Praise the Lord and pass the life preservers.
